Lab Med Technologist

Primary Duties Performs technical assignments of a complex nature in any area of the laboratory without immediate supervision. Performs all emergency tests as required.



Essential Functions of the Job:



Evaluates specimens and test orders for acceptability and determines rejections according to established guidelines.



Performs specimen collection and ensures the proper identification of all patients and specimens. Ensures the collection of the correct type of specimen at the appropriate time. Understands and practices patient care associated with phlebotomy



Accessions specimens with accuracy. Maintains and assures positive identity of all patient specimens, specimen types and aliquots throughout the analytical process.



Properly labels specimens, aliquots as required and obtains/ distributes specimens as necessary.



Prepares specimens for analysis according to established procedures



Stores specimens properly within the laboratory



Performs tests on each sample as required



Meets acceptable turnaround time for the department.



Recognizes testing errors/discrepancies and notifies appropriate supervisor when necessary



Operates all instruments according to accepted written protocols



Performs proficiency testing. Ensures that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.



Calls and documents abnormal, critical or STAT results according to established protocol.



Correlates test results with diagnosis and/or compares with previous results if available. Recognizes and resolves problems or inconsistencies.



Demonstrates proficiency in the use of the hospital (HIS) and laboratory information systems (LIS) and their application to all aspects of job related functions. (Result retrival, entering results, crediting, etc.)



Utilizes LIS to review workload, assuing proper collection, completion and reporting of tests ordered.



Processes receipt of departmental supplies. Labels, records and stores supplies received



Reviews quantities and expiration dates of all supplies. Maintains inventory as needed for department.



Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of difficult principles, procedures and techniques and the ability to make independent judgments on the basis of scientific knowledge.



Instructs Nursing personnel, or other health care workers in patient preparation for tests and in obtaining and handling specimens.



Prepares specimens for dispatch to reference laboratories



And procedures whenever test systems are not within laboratory’s acceptable level of performance. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established



Keeps current in the field of medical technology through literature, attendance at workshops and seminars. Maintains membership in professional organizations



May assume responsibilities of section supervisors in their absence. Participates in weekend on-premise supervision of the general laboratory as assigned and as necessary



And infection control to protect both self and patient. Practices hospital and laboratory safety according to policies and procedures. Is familiar with emergency procedures, codes and use of personal protective equipment. Reports incidents as necessary.



Assists physicians, hospital personnel, patients and general public with pertinent laboratory information. Directs questions or problems to appropriate personnel
