Sleep deprivation is a significant health and safety problem that affects everyone. About 70 million people in the United States have a sleep problem, and about 40 million of them have a chronic sleep disorder. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the effects of sleep loss on work performance may be costing U.S. employers some $150 billion in health care costs, lost work time, and loss of productivity.
Getting a good night's sleep is as important to our bodies and minds as good diet and exercise. Sleep experts say that most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep each night for optimum health, safety, and performance. But according to the National Sleep Foundation, nearly one-quarter of America's adults — 47 million people — don't even get the minimum amount of sleep they need to be alert the next day. Poor quality sleep can have serious health consequences. Low levels of oxygen can, over time, predispose a person to high blood pressure, stroke, and cardiovascular disease.
The Northern New Jersey Center for Sleep Medicine at Holy Name Hospital provides professional sleep studies conducted during a pleasant overnight stay at the hospital's hotel-like, state-of-the-art sleep laboratory. Operated in affiliation with industry-expert SleepTech, the Northern New Jersey Center for Sleep Medicine at Holy Name Hospital is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and is directed by pulmonologists and internists who are board-certified in sleep medicine.
The Center for Sleep Medicine can evaluate you for these and other sleep disorders:
- sleep apnea (interrupted breathing during sleep that can happen hundreds of times per night)
- periodic limb movement syndrome
- parasomnia (sleep walking and talking)
- insomnia
- narcolepsy (involuntary chronic excessive daytime sleepiness)
During the overnight evaluation, your heart rate, respiration, leg and eye movements, brain waves, and oxygen circulation will be monitored. Once you have completed your sleep study, our multidisciplinary sleep medicine team of pulmonologists, internists, and otolaryngologists (ear, nose, and throat specialists) will review your results. The team then develops a treatment plan this is individualized for your specific needs.
