The Nuclear Medicine Department at Holy Name Hospital performs more than 11,000 procedures a year and is a recognized industry leader in PET/CT imaging. Nuclear medicine specialists use safe radioactive substances to provide images of the body and treat disease. Nuclear medicine procedures often identify disease in the early stages, long before they become apparent with conventional imaging, such as CT, MRI, etc. The amount of radiation found in the average nuclear medicine procedure is comparable to a diagnostic x-ray. The Nuclear Medicine Department is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and is an educational affiliate of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ).
The Department recently added Blood Volume Analysis, Schilling analysis and Iodine 131 therapy to its repertoire of services. In addition to PET/CT, the Nuclear Medicine Department offers the following imaging:
- Bone Scan
- Bone Marrow
- Cardiac Viability
- Gallbladder
- Gallium
- Gastric
- Lung V/Q (lung ventilation and blood flow)
- MUGA (scan of the heart)
- Nuclear Stress Test
- OctreoScan
- Parathyroid
- Proctascint
- Salivary Gland
- Sentinal Node
- Testicular
- Thyroid

PET/CT Imaging
PET/CT combines a PET (positron emission tomography) and a CT scan (computed tomography) to offer physicians the most comprehensive analysis of a patient's system down to the cellular level in just one scan. The exact location and anatomical structure of diseased tissue or a tumor can be detected with PET/CT.
A PET/CT scan is more accurate at diagnosing, staging and restaging cancer than any other imaging method, including PET and CT alone by as much as 30 percent. PET/CT is capable of diagnosing disease at an earlier stage even before it becomes anatomically visible with conventional imaging. This added benefit can spare patients from unnecessary surgery and other diagnostic procedures.
No other imaging method has the ability to alter the course and outcome of a patient's condition or disease more than PET/CT.
