Respiratory Services

Respiratory ServicesWith a five-star rating from HealthGrades, an Internet benchmarking firm that rates health care institutions throughout the country, Holy Name Hospital's Respiratory Care Services provide state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services for patients with cardiopulmonary disorders.

Outpatient and inpatient services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for patients of all ages — neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Hospitalized patients with respiratory disorders are generally grouped together in the same nursing unit on Lobby North, and those with serious pulmonary disease are cared for in the hospital's medical/surgical intensive care unit.

A number of therapies are offered, including volume therapy (incentive spirometry, IPPB, BiPAP, mechanical ventilation), aerosol therapy (nebulizer treatment, meter dose inhalers), pulmonary hygiene (chest physiotherapy, suctioning, insufflator/exsufflator), and oxygen therapy (emergency response).

The department's management includes an administrative director with respiratory therapy experience, licensure, and registration and a chief of pulmonary medicine/medical director, who is board-certified in pulmonary medicine and is elected by the Division of Pulmonary Medicine for a three-year term. All staff respiratory care practitioners (RCPs) are licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services and registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care. All RCPs are required to complete an annual competency assessment evaluation attesting to their skills in respiratory care and in areas such as emergency incident/disaster management, fire and electrical safety, information management and privacy, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Patients must be referred by their physicians for appointments at the Pulmonary Function Lab, and every test requires a prescription.
