Surgical Services

surgical servicesHoly Name Hospital provides a wide range of surgical services in the subspecialties of general surgery, gynecology and gynecologic oncology otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat), plastic and reconstructive surgery, urology, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, neurospine, orthopedics, cardiothoracic surgery, dentistry, podiatric surgery, and maxillofacial surgery. Holy Name's surgeons work in cooperation with anesthesiologists who administer general anesthesia, regional anesthesia, and conscious sedation.

Nine operating rooms, an outpatient/bronchoscopy suite, post-anesthesia care unit, and 21-bed Same Day Surgery Unit encompass surgical services. Beepers are provided for family members so they can be notified of any changes in their loved ones' conditions or when they are out of surgery and recovering.

As part of Holy Name's Millennium Project to expand and renovate the hospital over the next several years, two operating room suites are being reconstructed, integrating minimally invasive and laparoscopic technology. Minimally invasive procedures — which are performed using special equipment including laparoscopes, endoscopes, lasers, and microsurgical technology — have revolutionized the field of surgery and have led to many new advances in surgical techniques. Patients experience less pain and complications, recuperate faster, and are often able to go home on the same day of minimally invasive surgery.

Holy Name has recently acquired the following surgical technology: new ophthalmic lasers and retinal equipment for ophthalmologic/retinal surgical procedures; minimally invasive navigation systems for ear, nose, and throat procedures and total joint replacements, which enable the otolaryngologists and orthopedists, respectively, to more accurately diagnose problems and view the surgical field using three-dimensional images during a procedure; and cryoablation and radiofrequency technology to treat prostate, liver, and neurological cancers.

The hospital's Picture Archiving Communications System, which digitally processes and stores radiologic images, enables surgeons to call up patients' X-rays, CT scans, MRI studies, and other images on computers while they are performing surgery. Having these radiologic results available instantly at the touch of a computer key can enhance the precision and outcome of the surgery.
