When the New York City Marathon was cancelled in the wake of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Nicole Coyle's hopes were dashed for running the legendary race

The 42-year-old Emerson resident and mother of three soon set her sights on the 2013 New York City Marathon, running four times a week outside her neighborhood and on the treadmills at HNH Fitness to build up her strength and endurance for the November event. Completing the New York City Half Marathon in March 2013 as a member of the American Cancer Society DetermiNation team was a personal accomplishment and warm-up for the full marathon that she was determined to run eight months later in November 2013.

But six weeks before the race, she developed a serious setback: Tendonitis in her left foot forced her to stop running for several weeks and to turn instead to a new exercise work-out.

"My running friend suggested spin classes at HNH Fitness, and I loved it!" says Nicole, 42. "Up to the time of the full marathon, I took spin classes several times per week and used weights to help with my endurance. Despite my foot injury, I was able to finish the 2013 New York City Marathon."

A member of HNH Fitness since 2007, Nicole has completed the "Run the Palisades" 5K to benefit the Diabetes Foundation every year since its founding in 2009. At this year's event, she and her 14-year-old daughter, Shannon, came in second in their respective age categories. Her 9-year-old son, Matt, ran it for the first time and came in at 24:37 minutes. The three of them along with Nicole's husband, Jeff, and their 11-year-old daughter, Jessica, ran the race in honor of Nicole's father, who lost his leg to diabetes.

Nicole exercises at least four days each week at HNH Fitness, combining spin classes, running on a treadmill and outside, weight training, and elliptical machines. She says she loves the convenience of the close-to-home center, its cleanliness, and comfortable, no-pressure atmosphere.

"Running is my meditation, when I can digest my thoughts, find solutions to problems, or just zone out," remarks Nicole. "But running can become stale if that's all you do. Spinning opened up a new door for me. Exercising at HNH Fitness revs me up and keeps my pilot light burning."

Nicole says her goals at HNH Fitness are to strengthen her core, improve endurance, build power in her legs, and transform her body. But there is another important reason as to why HNH Fitness is her exercise center of choice: her "gym family" of members, trainers, instructors, and staff.

"They supported me when I hurt my foot, helped me raise money for the Diabetes Foundation and American Cancer Society, and encourage me every day to challenge my body and improve my health," she says. "I feel empowered when I leave HNH Fitness."

HNH Fitness is not just for marathoners like Nicole. The center welcomes all who desire to focus on wellness, fitness, and positive lifestyle changes. New members receive a one-hour fitness evaluation with a certified exercise physiologist, one half-hour of Energy Smart nutrition counseling, and a Body Age™ assessment to determine a member's physiological age. The center's extensive options include three group exercise studios, more than 65 classes each week, personal training, state-of-the-art equipment, sports medicine, personal fitness evaluations, physical therapy, nutrition services, a day spa and sauna, a child care center, and the YouthFit program.
