Interventional radiology (IR) is a rapidly growing area of medicine. Under the direction of John Rundback, MD, an international leader in the field, revolutionary imaging techniques are being used to "see" inside the body while guiding narrow tubes (catheters) and other very small instruments through the blood vessels and other pathways to the site of an abnormality. IR enables patients to receive treatment for a variety of medical disorders without surgery.
Advantages of interventional radiology
- Most procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or require only an overnight stay at the Interventional Institute
- General anesthesia is seldom used
- Risk, pain and recovery time are often significantly reduced
- Patients have access to a wide array of nonsurgical treatment choices
