Radiofrequency Ablation

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a non-surgical minimally invasive treatment that kills the abnormal tissue while sparing healthy kidney tissue. It is performed by an interventional radiologist, who uses x-ray imaging to guide a needle into the tumor. Radiofrequency energy is transmitted from the needle into the target tissue, creating heat and killing the tumor.

This treatment does not affect the patient's overall health and most people can resume their daily activities in a few days. In a small number of cases, RFA extends patients' lives but it is mainly palliative.

  • It does not harm healthy tissue.
  • It is a very safe procedure and may be repeated if necessary.
  • Complication rates are low, about two to 3 percent.
  • It is very effective in shrinking or killing small to medium-sized tumors.
  • It can be combined with other treatments.
  • This treatment is successful in reducing pain and suffering.
  • It usually does not require general anesthesia.
