Stomach Cancer

Definition

The stomach is a muscular sac located below the ribs, in the upper middle of the abdomen. It holds food and breaks it down for digestion.

Stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, is relatively rare in the United States and the number of people diagnosed with the disease continues to decline each year. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer, occurring in the inside lining of the stomach.

About 28,000 people are diagnosed each year with stomach cancer. It is more common in men than women and typically affects older individuals - about 60 percent of those diagnosed are older than 65.
