Symptoms / Causes / Risk Factors/ Tests and Diagnosis

Symptoms

In the early stages of liver cancer, most people will not have any signs or symptoms. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience:

  • Diet heavy in salted and smoked foods
  • Diet low in fruits and vegetables
  • Family history of stomach cancer
  • Infection with Helicobacter pylori
  • Long-term stomach inflammation
  • Anemia
  • Smoking
  • Stomach polyps

Causes

The cause of stomach cancer is unknown, but there is a strong correlation between the disease and a diet high in smoked and salty food. As the use of refrigeration for preserving foods has increased, the rates of stomach cancer have declined.

Risk Factors

  • Diet heavy in salted and smoked foods
  • Diet low in fruits and vegetables
  • Family history of stomach cancer
  • Infection with Helicobacter pylori
  • Long-term stomach inflammation
  • Anemia
  • Smoking
  • Stomach polyps

Tests and Diagnosis

Several different tests may be done to diagnosis stomach cancer:

  • An upper endoscopy - a tiny camera is passed down the throat into the stomach. If any suspicious areas are found, a small piece of tissue may be collected (biopsy).

  • Imaging tests - CT scans and a special type of X-ray exam called a barium swallow.
