Holy Name Press Releases

Holy Name Launches Training Programs for Next Generation of Physicians at New Douglas M. Noble Center for Medical Education

June 20, 2025

Holy Name today announced the launch of its Graduate Medical Education (GME) program, welcoming its inaugural class of 16 resident physicians to the newly established Douglas M. Noble, M.D. Center for Medical Education.

“This marks a pivotal milestone in Holy Name’s 100 year legacy of care and underscores our commitment to training the next generation of physicians,” said Mike Maron, president and CEO of Holy Name. “Education and innovation will continue to go hand-in-hand as we enter into this next era of clinical excellence.”

Under the leadership of Vasantha K. Kondamudi, M.D., Chief Medical Officer and Designated Institutional Officer at Holy Name, and supported by a dedicated team of experienced program directors, medical educators, and clinicians, the GME program will initially offer residencies in:

  • Family Medicine (3 years)
  • Internal Medicine (3 years)
  • General Surgery (5 years)

A proposed four-year Obstetrics and Gynecology residency is currently undergoing accreditation review, with an anticipated start in July 2026.

With a looming national physician shortage in the U.S. – projected by the Association of American Medical Colleges to reach up to 86,000 physicians by 2036 – Holy Name is committed to investing in a strong residency program that prepares the next generation of physicians to provide exceptional care and while helping to expand the workforce.

“We believe that expanding and reforming residency training is one of the most direct ways to address the growing physician shortage in the U.S.,” said Dr. Kondamudi.

Overview Residency Programs

Family Medicine

The Family Medicine residency program cultivates innovative, compassionate physicians equipped with exceptional clinical skills. The rigorous curriculum emphasizes population and community health, integrating didactic and clinical experiences with research and community engagement.

Internal Medicine

The Internal Medicine residency program develops well-rounded, compassionate physicians who are committed to exemplary patient care, lifelong learning, and professional well-being. Residents will be fully prepared to lead and thrive within the evolving U.S. healthcare landscape.

General Surgery

The General Surgery residency program offers a robust, community-based learning environment focused on academic and clinical excellence. Residents will receive a patient-centered, evidence-based surgical education aimed at developing outstanding, compassionate surgeons.

“Our GME program is about more than just clinical training,” said Dr. Kondamudi. “We are cultivating future physicians who are deeply compassionate, purpose-driven, and committed to lifelong learning. At Holy Name, we’re creating a residency experience that fosters not only medical expertise, but also ignites passion for and builds resilience in the medical profession.”
